Guess the footballer

Guess the footballer. Six tries. Every day.

A daily player guessing game built on clues and comparison feedback. Find the mystery footballer using nationality, position, birth year, clubs, honours, and a signature fact.

The guessing loop

A wrong guess is never wasted

Most guessing games give you a yes or a no. GoalWord gives you a comparison. Every guess tells you how close you are on four attributes, and every wrong guess adds another clue to the dossier.

1. Make a guess

Type a name and choose a player from the autocomplete. The guess is locked once submitted.

2. Read the comparison

Green means a match. Amber means the birth year is within two years. Grey means no match, with an arrow for older or younger.

3. Unlock the next clue

The first clue is free. Each wrong guess reveals the next one, so the puzzle gets easier as you spend attempts.

4. Confirm the answer

A correct guess ends the round. All clues and the player’s career summary are revealed in the result.

The database covers goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards from different decades and leagues. It includes men’s and women’s football, World Cup winners, club legends, and modern stars.

The answer is always a player in the database. If a name does not appear in the autocomplete, it is not a valid guess.

The dossier

Six clues, six ways to narrow the field

The clues are ordered from broad to specific. Early clues help you eliminate large groups. Later clues are designed to confirm a shortlist.

01

Nationality

The national team is the first filter. It can eliminate entire continents of players before you spend a second guess.

02

Position

The broad position group and specific role tell you whether to think about a keeper, a defender, a midfielder, or a forward.

03

Birth year

The year, not the age. Combined with the comparison arrow, it places the player in a generation.

04

Clubs

A career list is often the most distinctive clue. One unusual club can identify a player faster than a nationality.

05

Competitions

Honours separate players with similar profiles: a World Cup winner, a Champions League winner, or a league specialist.

06

Signature

The final clue is a career-defining fact. It is designed to confirm a shortlist, not to be the only clue you need.

Strategy

A good guess is a question

The best first guess is not the player you think is most likely. It is the player who gives you the most information. A famous forward from a major football nation can confirm or eliminate nationality and position in one move, even if the answer is a defender from a different era.

Once you have two green attributes, stop guessing randomly. Build a shortlist. If the mystery player is a Spanish midfielder born around 1990, the answer is probably one of a handful of players. The shared-club clue can then separate them.

Use the clue order deliberately

The first clue is free, so you should always read it before your first guess. The second clue arrives after one wrong guess, the third after two, and so on. If you are stuck, spending a guess to unlock the next clue is often better than repeating a profile you have already eliminated.

Don’t forget the women’s game

If the nationality and position fit but your men’s shortlist is empty, think about women’s internationals. The database includes World Cup winners, Olympic champions, and club legends from the women’s game. The clues use the same structure, so the same deduction process applies.

Guessing FAQ

Questions about guessing footballers

How does “guess the footballer” work?+

One mystery footballer is selected for the daily challenge. You have six guesses. Each guess shows comparison feedback for nationality, position, birth year, and shared clubs, and each wrong guess unlocks one more clue.

Can I guess any footballer in the world?+

You can only submit players in the GoalWord database, which is a curated list of men’s and women’s players from different eras and leagues. The autocomplete shows valid names, and common aliases are accepted.

Are women’s footballers included?+

Yes. The database mixes men’s and women’s football. The daily schedule includes players from both, and the clues use the same structure for each.

What happens if I do not know the player?+

Use the clues and the comparison feedback. You do not need to recognise the answer immediately. Nationality, position, and birth year can narrow the field to a handful of candidates, and shared clubs often confirm the answer.

Is the game free?+

Yes. GoalWord is free to play. There is no account, paywall, or app download. Ads appear in page content and are kept away from the guess controls.

How is this different from a football trivia quiz?+

A trivia quiz asks you to recall a fact from a question. Guess the Footballer is a deduction game: you make a guess, receive comparative feedback, and use it to narrow the answer. Try the football trivia quiz if you want multiple-choice questions.
