GoalWord

About

A football game for people who argue about football

GoalWord is an independent daily player-guessing game. It is designed to be quick enough for a coffee break and deep enough for fans who can name a left-back from 1998.

The idea

Football has the best cast of characters

A five-letter word game is fun because the answer space is small and the feedback is precise. Football is the opposite: thousands of players, hundreds of clubs, and a century of history. That is exactly what makes it a good deduction space.

GoalWord narrows the space with a curated database and a fixed clue order. You are not guessing from the entire history of the sport. You are guessing from a hand-picked list, using nationality, position, birth year, and shared clubs to eliminate possibilities.

What makes it different

Most football quizzes ask you to recall a fact and move on. GoalWord asks you to solve a puzzle. A wrong guess is not a failure; it is information. Every guess shows how close you are on four attributes, and every wrong guess unlocks another clue.

The daily challenge is the same for everyone. That shared answer is what makes the result worth sharing: a compact emoji grid that shows your path without spoiling the player.

What it is not

GoalWord is not affiliated with Wordle, The New York Times, FIFA, UEFA, any league, club, player, or competition. Club and competition names are used for identification only. The game uses original abstract illustrations, not player photographs.

It is also not a gambling product. There are no prizes, no entry fees, and no real-money competition. Your stats are stored in your browser and are not a leaderboard.

What we care about

Four principles

One puzzle, done well

GoalWord is built around a single daily challenge rather than an endless content feed. The constraint is the point: one player, six guesses, and a result worth comparing.

Curated, not scraped

Every player in the 102-player database is selected and reviewed. Clues are tied to documented career facts, and the daily schedule is fixed so everyone gets the same puzzle.

Men’s and women’s football

The database includes players from both the men’s and women’s game, across different eras, countries, and positions. Women’s football is part of the daily rotation, not a separate mode.

Free, with clear ads

GoalWord is free to play. Advertising appears in page content and is clearly labelled. Ads are kept away from the guess controls, the clue panel, and the result card.

The database

102 players, one at a time

The launch database contains 102 curated players. They were chosen for recognisability, career significance, and a balanced mix of positions, countries, eras, and competitions. The daily schedule is fixed, so a puzzle does not change during the day and past puzzles remain stable in the archive.

Every player has a nationality, a position, a birth year, a club history, a set of competitions, and a signature fact. The clues are generated from those fields, which means the game can show consistent comparison feedback without inventing facts on the fly.

The database is reviewed for accuracy. If you spot an error, tell us with the player name and a source. Corrections are applied to future puzzles; a past result is not changed retroactively unless the error affects the answer.

The team

Small, independent, and accountable

GoalWord is run by a small editorial team. We write the guides, curate the player database, and maintain the game. We are not a media company, a betting operator, or a fantasy sports platform.

The site is funded by advertising. That means we have a responsibility to keep the game honest: ads are labelled, they do not sit next to the guess controls, and they do not influence which players are selected or which clues are written.

If you have a question, a correction, or a partnership enquiry, see the contact and support page for the current options and the fastest answers.
